Two arrests after high-risk game between Israel and France

Israel’s guest appearance in Paris was watched with great concern and the game was massively secured. On the whole, things remained quiet – with a few exceptions.

Two people were taken into police custody after the high-risk game between Israel and France. One person was arrested immediately during a “brawl” in the stadium stands, another after the game when video footage was viewed, Paris police prefect Laurent Nuñez told France 2.

There were concerns about security at the game in Paris given the targeted attacks on Israeli football fans in Amsterdam last Thursday. 4,000 police officers were deployed for the game – including in local transport and in the area around the stadium. Another 1,600 security guards worked at the venue. According to French media, only around 16,600 spectators watched the match in the stadium.

Security forces intervened in the stands

Things remained quiet in Paris until kick-off. In the first half there were clashes between a few dozen people in the north curve. Fans with Israeli flags were also involved, as seen in videos. The security forces and police quickly intervened and separated the two groups. According to Nuñez, things remained calm at a pro-Palestinian demonstration outside the stadium.

Israel coach Ran Ben Shimon thanked France for the security precautions in Paris. In terms of sport, both teams separated 0-0.
