Champions League for free: Gamers stream live games on Minecraft servers

Streaming services sometimes charge horrendous prices for live football. A trend in the gaming scene is avoiding payment models. Some are even building virtual public viewing locations.

Football is a billion-dollar business in which no one gets anything for free. Especially not the live broadcasts of games. Fans sometimes have to pay a lot of money to watch their favorite teams play from home. The price increases by streaming providers have caused great dissatisfaction in recent years.

At Sky, the package with the first and second Bundesliga now costs 30 euros per month. If you also want to watch the English Premier League, you have to shell out 40 euros. Dazn charges 34.99 euros per month for the Bundesliga and Champions League. The cheapest option for customers is Prime Video (8.99 euros per month), but they can only watch selected premier class games on the Amazon streaming service.

Due to the horrendous prices, some social media accounts offer their followers illegal live streams of football games. The trend has now found its way into the gaming scene.

The new mode provides more excitement? The opposite is the case

Pompous arena for virtual pack watching

In a short video circulating on Instagram, a user explains the trend. It shows a Tiktoker going live with his account and pretending to play Fifa (now “FC24”) on the PlayStation. However, if you take a closer look, you will notice that it is not eSports, but rather the live broadcast of the LaLiga game between Real Madrid and Espanyol Barcelona.

But the trend continues significantly. The video also shows how gamers stream Minecraft Champions League games in the game and invite them to virtual public viewing. To do this, they build their own backdrop on a server. You can see a pompous arena with stone stands and a gilded ceiling. In the middle you would expect a virtual stage with opera singers. But instead there is a huge screen showing football. “I really saw everything,” says the amazed Instagram user in the video.

How long will the gaming trend last?

On some platforms, followers have the option of donating to the streaming account, but they can also watch the respective game without paying anything for it. If you want to meet on a Minecraft server for a public viewing, you only have to spend 30 to 40 euros on the game once instead of paying the same price every month to a streaming service.

It remains to be seen how long the trend will last. Because providers like Dazn, Sky and Prime will not be enthusiastic about it and may take action against it. However, it may also be difficult to identify the illegal broadcasts if they are disguised as gaming streams.
