Just a week left until Uruguay definitively choose who will be your next president in the 2024 runoff: Yeah Yamandu Orsi for him Broad Front (FA) either Alvaro Delgado for him National Party (PN) and the Republican Coalition; But first, both candidates must present and discuss their proposals in the debate that will take place this Sunday, at 9 p.m.
Finally, and for the first time, Orsi and Slim They will face each other in an official debate, as indicated by law 19,827. The appointment will take place at the audiovisual production company Study 9this Sunday from 9 p.m.; and will be broadcast on national radio and television, with simultaneous interpretation in sign language.
Although the Frente Amplio understands that the debate will not have major repercussions at the level of votes, they see the event as an opportunity to convey the program of the eventual left-wing government with greater strength, as well as to continue putting on the table the dialogic character who, according to what they point out, is the only person with governance facing the period 2025-2030. From the ruling party, meanwhile, they will seek to demonstrate live and direct what they point out as inconsistencies in the Frente-Amplista proposals.
Structure and themes
As was decided in the multiple meetings of the campaign teams with the representatives of the Electoral Court, The debate will have a total duration of 90 minutes and will include three blocks with two sessions of seven minutes each, in which electoral propaganda cannot be broadcast.
The debate will have five thematic axes: human development, which will include the topics of housing, health, sports, culture and disability; Security, targeting crime, drug trafficking and prisons; Economy, in which production and international insertion will also be discussed; Knowledge, as a way of encompassing education and innovation; and Job, where employment, salary and social security will be addressed.
In each of these thematic axes, the candidates will have a first presentation of three minutes, a first reply of two minutes, and a second and last reply of one minute; but they cannot be interrupted. Likewise, and based on the draw carried out by the Electoral Court, Orsi —located on the right— will open and close the debate, as well as blocks 2 and 4; while Slim —on the left— will close axes 1, 3 and 5.
At the close of the debate, each candidate will have two minutes to deliver their final message.
More dynamics in the exchange
Although the characteristics of the debate are very similar to those of 2019, starting with the place where it will take place —Studio 9— and the organizing team —Studio 9 in conjunction with Channel 5 and the general coordination of the communication agency Sign-; adjustments were also made, mainly to achieve a more dynamic exchange.
In that sense, the new format will allow the candidates to respond to each other to a greater extent than the then contenders did in 2019, Luis Lacalle Pou and Daniel Martinez. In any case, interruptions will not be allowed, but both Orsi as Slim They must wait for their corresponding turn to reply or present to speak.
The moderators of the debate, according to the agreement between the two commands and the Electoral Court, will be Pilar Teijeiro and Raul Ponce de Leon.
The delegations
Likewise, another aspect agreed upon by each candidate’s teams is the number of advisors who will be able to accompany them on the night of the debate: six people, as happened five years ago, with whom they will be able to meet and exchange during the rounds. And a photographer from each of the campaigns will also join.
From the Frente Amplio, the campaign manager has already been confirmed, Alejandro Sánchez, and one of the members of the command, Camilo Cejas; and the eventual Minister of Economy is also expected to attend in a government of Orsi, Gabriel Oddone.
In the case of the ruling party, it is likely that among the six people who make up the advisory team in the study of the debate are Agustín Iturralde, coordinator of the technical teams and the coalition government program, and Diego Labat, eventual Minister of Economy of Slim.
On the other hand, each candidate will be able to bring another 20 companions who will not be able to enter the studio due to space issues, so they will meet in specific and separate rooms, from where they will follow the debate through screens.
