Next stop Davis Cup – Sinner is not finished yet
Jannik Sinner is standing out this tennis season. In Turin he celebrated an emotional victory in front of his home crowd – and is aiming for another title this year.
At the end of an outstanding season with his first title at the ATP Finals, world number one Jannik Sinner hasn’t had enough of tennis. After the ATP year-end tournament in Turin, the 23-year-old will go to Malaga, Spain. At the final round of the Davis Cup, where Spanish world star Rafael Nadal will end his career, Sinner wants to defend the title with the Italian team. Twelve months ago, Sinner led Italy to its first Davis Cup triumph in 47 years.
Impressive statistics for Sinner
In 2025, Sinner will tackle the Australian Open in January as the first sporting highlight of the year as defending champion. “Whatever we can capture, we take with us – and the rest we learn,” said the 23-year-old after the 6:4, 6:4 in the final of the ATP Finals against the American Taylor Fritz. He also approached the 2024 season with this motto. He didn’t set himself a specific goal. He wants to keep calm in the coming year and approach things seriously but also in a relaxed manner.
With two Grand Slam triumphs, a total of eight titles and 70 wins, Sinner has had an outstandingly dominant year. He only lost six matches all season, a remarkably low number.
Sinner hype in Italy despite the stir
The South Tyrolean was particularly dominant on hard courts: Like only the superstars Novak Djokovic (Serbia) and Roger Federer (Switzerland) before him, he won the Australian Open, the US Open and the ATP Finals as the three biggest hard court events of a year. “My goal was to understand what I could accomplish this year,” Sinner said.
Regardless of the doping scandal surrounding him, Sinner is celebrated in Italy. The spectators loudly sang his name in the Turin multi-purpose hall in the final against Fritz. The vortex has so far had no influence on Sinner’s results. A final decision on a possible ban is still pending.
After two positive doping tests, Sinner was acquitted. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency Wada appealed the case to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.
