From Turin to Malaga
Double success after coup: “Every nice adjective applies”
After the historic tennis success, the German duo Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz are heading to Malaga. The next task in the Davis Cup is on Wednesday.
The successful German doubles team Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz were not yet aware of how much the title was worth after their coup at the tennis season finale. “This is something very special – definitely,” said Krawietz and announced that he wanted to “celebrate of course”: “We don’t get out at home that much. The families have supported us from home, so we can relax and let go,” said the 32 year old from Coburg. “If you don’t celebrate the title, then what other title?”
With the 7:6 (7:5), 7:6 (8:6) against the world number one Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic from El Salvador and Croatia, the US Open finalists had a historic one at the ATP Finals in Turin German tennis success ensured. The two were the first German doubles team to win the season finale and can call themselves unofficial tennis world champions.
“Every nice adjective that comes to mind probably applies to us right now. Happy, happy, satisfied, is probably not enough. So – choose one,” said Pütz from Frankfurt, who celebrated his 37th birthday on Tuesday celebrates.
“We’re used to worse things”
But there was hardly any opportunity for a lavish party. The flight from Turin via Madrid to Malaga was planned for Monday afternoon. The two were expected there in the evening by the German Davis Cup team. This time the itinerary was “completely fine,” said Pütz. “We’re used to worse.” On Wednesday, the Davis Cup team will face the quarter-finals against Canada in the final round.
In September, immediately after losing the US Open final in New York, Krawietz and Pütz had to travel to China in a crazy odyssey – with a 16-hour trip to Hong Kong and a time difference. “So we don’t worry too much about the trip,” said Pütz this time.
