FIFA analyzes eliminating the VAR and starting to use the FVS: what it is and how the new system works

The FIFA studies the possibility of replacing the Video Referee Assistance (VAR) system by a new tool called Football Video Support (FVS)a more simplified option and with the direct intervention of the coaches in referee decisions.

Why FIFA could remove VAR from football

Since its implementation the VAR It generated controversy around the world, with criticism over its effectiveness and in certain cases increasing confusion rather than resolving disputes.

The controversy reached such a point that, this year, the Premier League of England came to debate the possibility of eliminating the VAR of its competition due to the disagreements generated between players, technicians and fans.

Given the growing dissatisfaction with technology, FIFA is betting on FVS as a more accessible alternative with less intrusion.

What is FVS, how it works and how coaches intervene

Unlike the VARhe FVS It will require only between four and five cameras to review plays, eliminating the figure of the video referee.

Additionally, instead of the referee being the one to decide when to review a play, The system will allow coaches to request at least two reviews per game. However, if a review is unsuccessful, an opportunity to request another will be lost.

This new proposal also stipulates that the referee will have the obligation to review the play when a coach requests it, which marks an important difference with the VARwhich allowed referees to resort to video on their own initiative.

The FIFA hopes to obtain approval from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in the coming months to begin implementing the FVS in international tournaments, with the possibility of it being used widely from 2025.
