“Great stories can come from anywhere.” That was the message from Bela Bajaria, Content Director of Netflix, at the company’s first International exhibition held on Monday in Los Angeles.
Bela Bajariaalong with Minyoung Kim (Vice President of Content for Asia-Pacific), Francisco Ramos (Vice President of Content for Latin America), Monika Shergill (Vice President of Content for India) and Larry Tanz (Vice President of Content for Europe, the Middle East and Africa), highlighted the commitment of Netflix to program on-demand content in local languages and build deep partnerships with more than 1,000 producers from more than 50 countries outside the United States.
During the presentation, Ramos shared that they are focused on “creating stories that make the audience press ‘play’ and stay. A show or movie that they love so much that they can’t wait to finish it and recommend it to their friends.”
Programming highlights included the series One hundred years of loneliness (Colombia), The Leopard (Italy), The Last Samurai Standing (Japan), The Empress: Season 2 (Germany), The Atomic Shelter (Spain), Senna (Brazil), Alice in Borderland: Season 3 (Japan), and the movies Revelation (Korea) and A ghost in battle (Spain).
At the event, creative executives explained why they commissioned these titles and how they reflect their local cultures. Diego Ávalos, Vice President of Content for Spain, remarked that “we have always focused on letting the Spanish idiosyncrasy be reflected in our stories. “We are producing in every region of Spain, which is a bit like if you made a television show in all 50 states of the United States.” “People like the authenticity of local stories”Bajaria explained, and reinforced that there is no such thing as making a global program. “When you try to do something that appeals to everyone, you end up making something that appeals to no one.”
