German coup: Ski jumper Paschke wins the start of the World Cup

Andreas Wellinger is the great German hope at the start of the ski jumping World Cup. But a teammate caused the sensation. Returnee Markus Eisenbichler also scores.

The German ski jumper Pius Paschke has won the first individual World Cup of the winter. The 34-year-old surprisingly won ahead of the Austrians Daniel Tschofenig and Maximilian Ortner on the large hill in Lillehammer, Norway. It was the second World Cup victory in the career of the WSV Kiefersfelden athlete. After the first round, Paschke was still in sixth place.

Andreas Wellinger, second in the Four Hills Tournament and third in the overall World Cup last season, missed the top ten in twelfth place. Markus Eisenbichler, who competed in the second-class Continental Cup last winter, finished 24th in his World Cup comeback.
