Hamburger SV is separating from coach Baumgart

Steffen Baumgart’s time as coach of Hamburger SV is quickly over. After four league games without a win, the second division promotion candidate is parting ways with the 52-year-old.

Second division soccer team Hamburger SV has separated from coach Steffen Baumgart. The club announced this one day after the disappointing 2-2 home game against FC Schalke 04, in which HSV lost a 2-0 lead. As in the spring, assistant coach Merlin Polzin will take over the team on an interim basis.

“Steffen gave everything for HSV with great passion, energy and commitment right up to the end. Our analysis of the current situation and yesterday’s game made it clear once again that we believe a new impulse is necessary to get out of the performance and results crisis.” , sports director Stefan Kuntz was quoted as saying.

“In the past I would have dragged on with this defeat for a long time”

Performance drops against outsiders

The Hanseatic League had recently failed to win four league games in a row and the 52-year-old had come under increasing criticism. After impressive performances against their then competitors Paderborn (2:2), Düsseldorf (3:0) and Magdeburg (3:1), the North Germans had suffered some slumps that were difficult to explain. In Elversberg the team conceded a 2:4, and HSV lost 1:3 to relegation candidate Eintracht Braunschweig due to individual mistakes.

Baumgart himself is said to have taken the decision calmly. “It was an exciting and very intense time. I remain connected to the club and hope that HSV achieves its goals,” said the 52-year-old. His assistants Rene Wagner and Kevin McKenna also have to leave.

Only nine months in office

After the draw against Schalke, which the fans acknowledged with whistles, the sporting leadership around sports director Kuntz had enough. One day later they decided to retire Baumgart, an avowed HSV fan.

Nine months after his debut, the Rostock native was unable to further develop the team, which was full of quality.
