World Cup start
Double victory for furious German ski jumpers
The ski jumpers Katharina Schmid and Selina Freitag went one better at the end of the World Cup opening weekend. For Schmid it is already the seventh individual triumph in Norway.
The German ski jumpers crowned their outstanding start to the season with a double victory in the second individual competition in Lillehammer. Katharina Schmid triumphed on the large hill in Norway ahead of her teammate Selina Freitag. The Austrian Lisa Eder came third.
It was “madness,” said Schmid. “I’m really happy. This shows that we worked well over the summer.” She was “speechless,” said Freitag with glassy eyes. National coach Heinz Kuttin said the conditions were “incredibly difficult” due to the snowfall. The strong performances should give his athletes even more self-confidence.
For Schmid it was the 16th World Cup victory of her career and the seventh individual success in Lillehammer. On Saturday, the Oberstdorfer came second behind the Slovenian Nika Prevc and before Friday. The two top German jumpers had previously won the first mixed team competition of the winter on Friday together with Andreas Wellinger and Pius Paschke.
