Percy Jackson and the Olympians officially renewed the role of Zeus. The series of Disney+ has chosen Courtney B. Vance to take over from the deceased Lance Reddickwho passed away last year, shortly after the first season premiered.
“Finding someone to take on this role in the future was not an easy task, but when the icon Courtney B. Vance responded to the call, we knew the gods were listening,” said the executive producer Dan Shotz in a statement posted to the series’ Instagram on Monday. “This film legend not only wanted to honor the books, but also Lance’s legacy. We can’t wait for you all to see him take the throne”.
In the season 1 finale of the Disney+ series, Reddick played the Greek god in an extensive scene with the series’ protagonist, Walker Scobell.while Percy confronts Zeus atop Mount Olympus. It was one of his last on-screen roles.
Zeus is present in all five Percy Jackson and the Olympians novels by Rick Riordan.
Earlier this year, Shotz and fellow executive producer Jon Steinberg discussed the possibility of reprising the character, saying at the time: “I think there’s a little bit of denial as well. It’s something we’ll have to deal with. But “We are incredibly grateful for this character he helped build and the presence he created. I don’t envy anyone who has to step into his shoes.”
