Yerba mate: historic drop in domestic consumption and exports

Domestic consumption of yerba mate accumulated between January and October of this year reached 215,331,111 kilos, marking the lowest level since 2016, when similar figures were recorded in the same period, according to data from the National Institute of Yerba Mate (INYM).

According to a report from the National Yerba Mate Institute (INYM) in October, domestic consumption was 22,424,232 kilos, with a decrease of 5.75% compared to September and 10.05% compared to October 2023. At an annual level, the cumulative figure for 2024 shows a drop of 8.91% compared to the same period last year.

On the other hand, Yerba mate exports between January and October totaled 36,930,192 kilos, the highest volume recorded since 2019, when in the same period 39.8 million kilos were exported.

However, October’s performance reflects a slowdown: 3,756,455 kilos were exported, which represents a decrease of 22.7% compared to September, when shipments abroad reached 4,863,858 kilos.

Likewise, the accumulated between the domestic market and shipments abroad also gives a negative result with 252,625,237 kilos, the lowest result in the last five years.

Overview

While the domestic market is going through one of its worst crises in the last decade, the export sector shows resilience with positive accumulated figures. However, the volatility of monthly shipments raises questions about the ability to maintain growth towards the end of the year.

Representatives of the herbal sector have expressed concern about the double impact of the drop in domestic consumption and fluctuations in foreign trade.highlighting the need for policies that promote the competitiveness of the Argentine product in international markets.
