Toboggan surprise: record world champion with comeback victory

Record world champion Toni Eggert achieves a victory in his toboggan comeback. Dajana Eitberger experienced a painful mishap at the start of the World Cup. There is also an individual victory.

One and a half years after his retirement, record world champion Toni Eggert rode to his 55th Luge World Cup victory in a doubles with his new partner Florian Müller. During the comeback in Lillehammer, the 36-year-old was unbeatable after the two runs on the Olympic ice track in 1994. The six-time overall World Cup winner recently worked as a trainer in the USA because his long-time partner Sascha Bencken had enough of the fuss and wanted to have more time for his family.

“We have proven that we are racing drivers. That is of course great, it can now give us self-confidence for the next few weeks,” said veteran Eggert, who is the only luger to build his sled completely himself and is at the Olympics together with 23-year-old Müller Wants to win gold in 2026 – after bronze and silver in 2018 and 2022. “Now we can’t get arrogant and think it’s going well,” says Eggert and warned against too much euphoria: “Sometimes there are small setbacks.” The record Olympic champions Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt and Hannes Orlamünder/Paul Constantin Gubitz came fifth and sixth at the start in Norway.

Taubitz victory in the singles, second place in the women’s doubles

Five-time world champion Julia Taubitz showed her class at the start. “Starting the season with a win is super cool,” said the 28-year-old. After setting a track record in the first run, Taubitz prevailed in the women’s singles with a lead of 0.092 seconds over American Emily Sweeney. In the women’s doubles, Jessica Degenhardt and Cheyenne Rosenthal were only beaten by the victorious Americans Chevonne Forgan and Sophia Kirby, 0.017 seconds behind. Former world champion Dajana Eitberger (33) fell with her new toboggan partner Magdalene Matschina (19). “This is very, very bitter. A bitter pill that we have to swallow right now,” said former individual world champion Eitberger. “I’m fine. But Dayana has a few small aches and pains,” said Matschina and announced: “Get up and carry on.” Things will continue in Innsbruck-Igls next week.
