Ski star Shiffrin suffers severe stab wound in stomach after fall

While chasing her hundredth World Cup victory, Mikaela Shiffrin falls heavily. After a night in the hospital, she gives an update on her health.

Ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin suffered a severe stab wound to her stomach when she fell in Killington and will miss the Alpine World Cup for the time being. The US Ski Association said no ligaments in the joints, bones or internal organs were injured in the accident in the second round of the giant slalom.

The stab wound on the right side of the abdomen cannot be stitched because it is too deep and there is a risk of infection, it was specified in another message. Shiffrin is in a lot of pain and can’t walk well at the moment. It was unclear when she would return to skiing, it was said.

The 29-year-old was aiming for her 100th victory in the World Cup at her home event in the US state of Vermont and attacked the final in the giant slalom as the fastest in the first round. But then she slipped, rolled over and crashed into a safety fence.

She suffered a shock, was unable to move and was afraid of internal injuries. That’s why she was taken to the valley in a rescue sled and taken to a clinic in an ambulance, as the athlete explained.

Shortly after the race they had already released a video from the hospital and said that there was “no cause for great concern at this time”. “I just can’t move. I have a big abrasion and something impaled me.” It was initially unclear what exactly caused the stab wound to her in the accident.

Comeback uncertain

It quickly became clear that she would not be able to take part in the slalom on Sunday – her flagship discipline – and would therefore have to wait until she could aim for her 100th success as the World Cup record winner. The two giant slaloms scheduled for next weekend in Mont-Tremblant in Canada have been canceled due to a lack of snow.

Sweden’s Sara Hector won the giant slalom on Saturday in Killington, 0.54 seconds ahead of Zrinka Ljutic from Croatia. The Swiss Camille Rast came third (+1.05).
