According to government figures, 56 people were killed and many injured in a mass panic among football fans in Guinea. Clashes broke out between fans of the city’s team and those from Labe during a local tournament in the West African city of Nzerekore on Sunday evening. Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on behalf of the government of the West African country and announced an investigation into those responsible for the accident.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred in the 84th minute of the game, when neither team had yet scored a goal. When the referee pulled out a red card against a player from the Labe team, fans of the team started throwing stones.

Security forces used tear gas, causing panic among the spectators. The football match was part of a campaign by the military junta ruling Guinea.
