DFB Cup
Third division team Bielefeld kicks SC Freiburg out – VfB Stuttgart easily advances
Arminia Bielefeld pulled off a surprise in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. Unlike SC Freiburg, VfB Stuttgart did not show any weakness against Jahn Regensburg.
SC Freiburg embarrassed themselves in the DFB Cup and were eliminated in the round of 16 at Arminia Bielefeld. The Bundesliga team deservedly lost 1:3 (0:2) to the third division team. In front of 26,311 spectators at the sold-out Bielefelder Alm, Christopher Lannert in the 28th minute, Julian Kania (36th/hand penalty) and Louis Oppie (81st) scored the euphorically applauded goals for the hosts, who are increasingly becoming a cup scare.
Arminia, who had already knocked a first division team, 1. FC Union Berlin, out of the competition in the second round, can look forward to another football festival evening. The Freiburgers, who were changed to five positions by coach Julian Schuster, experienced bitter disappointment three days after their league win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Michael Gregoritsch’s goal (63′) was not enough.
DFB Cup: SSV Jahn Regensburg – VfB Stuttgart
Even after a radical rotation, VfB Stuttgart reached the quarter-finals and can continue to dream of the trip to Berlin. Without Alexander Nübel, Maximilian Mittelstädt or Ermedin Demirovic in his starting line-up, the Swabian Champions League starter confidently won 3-0 (2-0) against the second division bottom team SSV Jahn Regensburg with no chance.
Three days before the Bundesliga home game against 1. FC Union Berlin, a Stuttgart starting eleven that had been changed to seven positions was at least one class too strong for the Upper Palatinate team, who can now concentrate exclusively on their complicated project of staying in the league.
Enzo Millot (10th minute) and Anrie Chase (19th) quickly robbed the harmless Jahn of any hope of a sensation in front of 15,210 spectators. Nick Woltemade (61′) rounded off VfB’s successful business trip, who was even unlucky when substitute Demirovic (74′) hit the post.
In the evening there will be games between FC Bayern Munich and cup defenders Bayer Leverkusen as well as between Werder Bremen and second division team Darmstadt 98.
