“It went well”: Cycling star Evenepoel reports after surgery

Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel suffers several broken bones in a training accident. One day after the fateful fall, the 24-year-old speaks out.

The Belgian double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel survived the operation well after his training accident. “Everything went well,” the Belgian cycling star told his 1 million fans on the Instagram platform. “It will be a long road, but I am fully focused on my recovery and am determined to come back stronger step by step,” the 24-year-old continued.

Evenepoel suffered several broken bones in the collision with a car door that suddenly opened. According to his team, among other things, he suffered a fractured rib, a fracture of his right shoulder blade and his right hand. How much the fall will affect Evenepoel’s season planning remains questionable.

The former football talent also thanked everyone for their support following the disastrous event. After the accident, Evenepoel was taken to the hospital in Anderlecht for initial examinations, then went to the hospital in Herentals for further treatment.

According to the Belgian news agency Belga, the accident occurred in Oetingen near Brussels. The car was a vehicle from the Belgian postal service Bpost, it said. The postwoman is said to have opened the driver’s door of the vehicle, which caused the collision. Evenepoel said he wanted to express his support to the woman involved in the accident.

Two serious falls in the past

It wasn’t the first serious fall of his cycling career. In 2020 he suffered a broken pelvis after a bad crash on the Tour of Lombardy and had to take a long break. Last year he was also caught in the violent mass fall during the Tour of the Basque Country, when he suffered fractures to his shoulder blade and collarbone.

The cycling star won the time trial and the road race at the Summer Olympics in Paris. At the end of September he also became time trial world champion for the second time.
