Kylian Mbappé: Rape investigations are closed

Sweden
Rape investigations against Mbappé are closed

The public prosecutor’s office is closing its investigation against football star Kylian Mbappé on suspicion of rape – due to a lack of evidence.

For several weeks, Swedish prosecutors investigated French soccer star Kylian Mbappé on suspicion of rape.

Now the Stockholm public prosecutor’s office is closing the investigation. The authority announced this in a statement on Thursday.

The reason for this is a lack of evidence.

“In my assessment, the evidence is insufficient to continue the investigation and the investigation will therefore be closed,” said Senior Prosecutor Marina Chirakova, who led the investigation.

The 25-year-old Real Madrid professional has not been accused of any crime, it said.

Real professional Mbappé was not interviewed

Mbappé was suspected of having committed rape in a hotel after a visit to Stockholm on October 10th. The investigation also included two cases of sexual harassment, reported .

The Swedish newspaper reported that the professional footballer was not informed of the suspicion and was not questioned about it.

“You cannot hold hearings with people suspected of a crime without informing them of the suspicion,” Chirakova told the paper.

The senior public prosecutor added that “the usual investigative measures” had been taken and a number of interviews had been carried out.

According to Aftonbladet, forensic medical examinations were also carried out.

“It is common practice in sexual violence investigations to also conduct forensic examinations, and we did that in this case,” said Chirakova. She did not want to give further details. The prosecutor’s office has not yet officially named the plaintiff’s name.

Mbappé denied allegations

Mbappé commented on the rape allegations at the weekend and emphasized that they had nothing to do with him. He never felt affected by it, he said on the French television show “Clique” on Canal+.

“I was surprised. I’m still surprised, by the way. These are things that happen and you don’t see them coming,” he said.

Mbappé described the first reports in the Swedish press in October as fake news. “He knows that he has absolutely nothing to blame himself for,” his lawyer Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard told broadcaster TF1 last month. Mbappé had also announced that he would file a complaint for defamation or making a trumped-up crime.
