German double victory
Biathlete Grotian celebrates her first World Cup victory in front of Preuß
Selina Grotian celebrates her first World Cup success at the age of 20. Franziska Preuß made the dream day perfect from a German perspective in second place.
Biathlete Selina Grotian celebrated her first World Cup victory of her career at the annual finals in Le Grand-Bornand and secured the first German double success since March 2020 with Franziska Preuß. Grotian, who is only 20 years old, prevailed in the mass start in rain and snow despite a penalty loop, 12.7 seconds ahead of her teammate.
The slightly ailing Preuß, who had come second in the sprint and winner in the pursuit, remained flawless, but could no longer hold her own on the final lap. Nevertheless, the 30-year-old, who is in the form of her life, extended her lead in the overall World Cup. The Slovakian Paulina Batovska Fialkova came third.
Discipline coach Kristian Mehringer’s protégés ended the first third of the season with nine podium places – the two successes for Preuß and the winning debut for Grotian were outstanding. She had been very unlucky in the pursuit the day before when she lost her right ski on a descent in the first laps and ended up finishing 14th.
After Vanessa Voigt (27) and Julia Tannheimer (19) withdrew due to health reasons, only Grotian and Preuß were at the start for Germany.
