Tournament in Switzerland: Hrubesch believes the DFB women can do “everything” at the European Championships

Former national coach Horst Hrubesch believes the German footballers and his successor Christian Wück can do “everything” at the 2025 European Championship in Switzerland. “Because I know there are good girls there, young girls,” said the 73-year-old to the German Press Agency with a view to the tournament from July 2nd to 27th. “You probably need a bit of luck, but we’ve had that too.”

The 73-year-old won Olympic bronze in France with the national team led by captain Alexandra Popp and then passed on responsibility to Wück, as had long been announced.

The new head coach tested some top talents in his first four international matches and initiated the change after the resignation of Popp and defense chief Marina Hegering. The DFB team won in England (4:3) and Switzerland (6:0) under Wück’s leadership, but suffered home defeats against Australia (1:2) and Italy (1:2).

Hrubesch watched the games on television after his term in office and is still enthusiastic about the DFB team’s performance. “The decisive factor is: They go from the first to the last minute. They accelerate, they try, they do, they do,” praised the HSV idol. In Switzerland, Wück is aiming for the ninth European Championship title for the German selection; in the preliminary round they will face Poland, Denmark and Sweden.

Olympics with “Images for World Peace”

Hrubesch keeps watching videos from the medal ceremony and the closing ceremony in Paris: “If you look at the world, these are actually the images of world peace. You see that people can live with each other and don’t have to live against each other. ”

He continues to be in contact with the national players. The former head ball monster also confirmed that he would be traveling to the European Championships in Switzerland with his wife Angelika in a motorhome and would like to stay in this “dream country” for the entire tournament. “I assume that they will make it to the final,” said Hrubesch.

Hrubesch “doesn’t want to be a disruptive factor” at the European Championships

“I certainly won’t be a disruptive factor,” he emphasized. If a meeting happens, that’s okay. “It’s certainly not going to happen that I arrive straight there and say hello. But you actually run into each other automatically. If there’s a big break, maybe we can go there and say hello,” added Hrubesch.

He’s not worried that he won’t be able to find a campsite given the influx of visitors during the European Championships. “We’re flexible. It’s just like in the game: you always have to adapt to the situation that comes your way.”
