Association summons footballer for hugging woman

A prominent footballer in Iran got closer to a female fan than the association allowed. He now has to go to report about a hug.

A well-known professional footballer in Iran has been summoned to appear before the football association’s ethics committee because of the forbidden embrace of a female fan. Ramin Resaeian of Tehran giants Esteghlal was summoned by the Iranian Football Association after he hugged a female fan before his club’s game on Thursday against Chadormalu in the central province of Jasd, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported on Friday. The association initially did not comment on this.

34-year-old Resaeian, who plays in the defender position, has played more than 60 games for the Iranian national team. He also played for clubs in Qatar and Belgium.

Iran bans physical contact

After the Islamic Revolution of 1979, a law came into force banning unrelated men and women from any physical contact. Women were also banned from attending football games in stadiums for decades. The ban was only relaxed in 2022.

Resaeian’s summons is not the first incident of this kind. In April, Esteghlal goalkeeper Hossein Hosseini was suspended after he hugged a female fan. According to media reports, the Iranian Football Association sentenced Hosseini to a fine of the equivalent of 4,400 euros because he had “behaved badly towards the security officers” during the game.
