The head of the Buenos Aires Government, Jorge Macri, spoke tonight about the advancement of the legislative elections in the City and his proposal to suspend the local STEP. In that sense, he demanded that the Nation move forward with the elimination of the primaries. Furthermore, he announced that he will promote a tax reform on Gross Income.
Macri visited the studios of C5N to participate in an interview with the journalist Gustavo Sylvestre in the program Minute One, where he analyzed the current state of local politics, its correlation with the national plot and the changes that the Buenos Aires Executive Branch seeks to promote by 2025.
The capital’s mayor opened the game with an explanation of the electoral reform that, as Ámbito advanced, contemplates the unfolding of the elections and the sending of a project to the Legislature to suspend the internal ones. “It is a reform to avoid PASO in legislative elections because it is practically not used when legislative matters are discussed.“, he said and considered that it is “different from when positions of the Executive Branch are discussed.”
Jorge Macri defended the split and asked the Nation to modify the STEP
“We can discuss whether it is reasonable or not that it is mandatory and whether citizens have to pay for it or not,” Macri continued, although he raised the need to hold the debate among all forces in the Buenos Aires Parliament.
Then, the head of Government asked that the Nation also promote its discussion. “For me next year We must save the country the STEP in general. I’m going to make the first gesture. The national government said it also wants to do the same. It would be reasonable for me to send the project“He claimed. “Sometimes things are announced that have no correlation. They say that they are going to call extraordinary meetings to discuss the Budget and then there was no Budget. The same with the PASO,” he criticized.

Regarding the mismatch between the Buenos Aires elections and the national ones, Macri reaffirmed that the scheduled date according to the calendar is July 6. “Now we are going to see if in extraordinary cases we can suspend the PASO. It seems to me that it is the most reasonable. It represents an expense of $20 billion. “We could discuss how to use these funds and what the different blocks propose,” he proposed and reiterated his request to the Nation: “We must also do the same at the national level.”. According to Guillermo Francos it is $200 billion. A lot of money,” he considered.
Along these lines, he questioned the intransigence of the ruling party when trying to generate agreements. “It doesn’t seem to me that the discussion doesn’t have to be ‘either we eliminate it or nothing’. It doesn’t always have to be all or nothing. What La Libertad Avanza proposes does not always work. If it had been all or nothing with the Budget, today the City would not have a Budget. You have to listen to the other. “Sometimes they bring good ideas,” he continued.
Jorge Macri’s claim for co-participation and the Buenos Aires agenda for 2025
One of the reasons for moving forward is to focus the discussion of the campaign on the City’s agenda. “I want to discuss city issues. Whether citizens agree or not with the co-participation that is owed to the porteños. We have to recover more US$5 billion What the Nation owes to the City. It is almost half of the entire City’s Budget for the entire year,” he said.
Regarding the claim for the co-participation debt, he recognized that the Government of Javier Milei “took a step forward with respect to what Alberto Fernández was” and “began to comply with the Court’s ruling regarding the precautionary measure.” However, he asked for the full return of the funds: “The debt that was accumulated is a huge balloon of silver. “We could build almost the entire subway again, to gain dimension.”
In response to a question from the deputy Leandro Santoro, who briefly crossed paths with him in the C5N studio, Macri explained one of the reasons that led him to change his position regarding his doubts about eliminating the primaries. “He (Santoro) described something very true about the last election. It worked very badly because it was a concurrentbut there is bad news in the law that was approved at the national level of the new Single Ballot. It does not coincide with the City Electronic Ballot, so we would go to a concurrent one. “That caused 10% to vote for president and not head of government, because they felt they had already voted,” he said, which is why he now considered it justified to change the calendar and try to suspend the primaries.
On the other hand, he asked not to underestimate the voter. “By changing a date or the electoral system you do not win or lose an election. People are intelligent and know what they are voting for. “No one likes having another voting date but they also like to hear the City’s agenda,” he continued.
Regarding the questions that he will ask the people of Buenos Aires during the electoral campaign, he made claims about the port and the judicial system. “Is it reasonable that the port is national, when in all provinces it is provincial? Is it reasonable that the Retiro terminal is managed by the Nation? I think not. Is it reasonable that the City does not have its complete judicial system?”said.
He then spoke about his bond with President Milei. “He listens more than any of his officials. Every time I want to talk to him he answers me and I feel an active listening. Afterwards he may not agree, welcome,” he stated, although he raised questions to the rest of the libertarian structure: “When it goes down the structure, there are almost inexplicable things: why they vote against the City Budget together with Kirchnerism and the left, almost with the same message, it is strange With the support that we have given them at the national level,” he questioned.
Jorge Macri spoke about the political setup at the national level and the future of the PRO in the City
The head of Government also referred to the “pressure” from the libertarians to reach an electoral merger with the PRO. And he talked about Milei’s recent change in position to go his own way. “If that is your decision, welcome. Now, when you want an agreement, you sit down to talk. It is not imposed. That logic of ‘we make an agreement everywhere or nothing’ is strange. It is not the way to start a relationship “If we seek an agreement, I will not impose conditions on you in public. We still have to give things time,” he summarized.
In another passage of the interview he spoke about the Buenos Aires army in the face of the legislative elections: “I don’t think we will go alone. In any case, we are going to form a front. I do not believe that the PRO only reflects all the ideas that we can represent. First you have to discuss it privately. What I do know is that until now the PRO has always been frontist,” he said regarding being able to converge with other parties.
Finally, he announced that he will announce a new project in the coming days. It will be a tax reform that will aim to benefit local taxpayers. “There is going to be very good news for the people of Buenos Aires, especially for those paying Gross Income”he advanced.
The journalist Gustavo Sylvestre He asked if one of the proposals would involve refunding money to taxpayers: “Don’t tell me you’re going to return the money?”he asked, to which Macri responded: “Don’t spoil the news for me. You have too much good information,” he laughed.
