Darts World Cup in London
Littler and Bunting complete semi-finals at Ally Pally
Three Englishmen and the Dutchman van Gerwen are playing for the World Cup title in London. The darts dream final is not far away.
Darts teenager Luke Littler has overcome the next hurdle on the way to his desired first world title. The 17-year-old Englishman clearly defeated Nathan Aspinall (also England) 5-2 in the quarter-finals that evening and now only needs two wins to win the Sid Waddell Trophy and around 600,000 euros in prize money.
Last year’s finalist Littler trumped Aspinall from the start. “The Nuke” (the atomic bomb), as Littler is called, won the first two sets straight away and was uncatchable afterwards. In the semi-finals on Thursday (from 8.30 p.m./DAZN and Sport1) he will face Stephen Bunting. The Englishman previously won comfortably 5-2 against former champion Peter Wright from Scotland.
Dream finale still possible
The dream final between Littler and three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen, longed for by many experts and fans, is still possible. Van Gerwen survived a high-class game against Callan Rydz in the afternoon. Rydz managed to win more legs and take more shots with 180 points, but he still lost the game 3:5. The Dutchman wants to win his fourth world title after 2014, 2017 and 2019.
Van Gerwen’s semi-final opponent will be Chris Dobey. The Englishman defeated former rugby professional Gerwyn Price 5-3. The 39-year-old muscleman had already led 2-0. Price made numerous missed throws to the double fields, from which Dobey benefited. The Welshman repeatedly puffed himself up in front of the fans in the Ally Pally and received massive boos for it.
German representatives will no longer be there in the new year. Ricardo Pietreczko was the last participant to be eliminated in the round of 16. Gabriel Clemens made it to the semi-finals two years ago – no other professional from Germany got that far before or after the Saarlander.
