The Prime Minister congratulates: Littler on the way to superstardom
Vice world champion at 16, world champion at 17: Luke Littler turned the darts world upside down within a year. The big competitor also takes off his hat.
Michael van Gerwen raved highly about the new darts world champion, and the Prime Minister personally congratulated him. “Big compliments to Luke. A new star is born every 17 years. Luke Littler is one of them,” said van Gerwen after he had virtually no chance in the 3-7 defeat in a fascinating World Cup final in London. 17 years ago, the last star on the PDC tour in van Gerwen’s eyes was: van Gerwen (35) himself.
Great Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer sent congratulations to the first-time champion via the social network X. “An inspiring performance. And under this pressure to lift the trophy. You can be really proud of what you have achieved tonight. Not just for yourself but for the entire sport of darts,” Starmer wrote.
A winner like Becker or Graf
Littler conquered the darts world within twelve months and successfully made his second attempt exactly one year to the day after he lost the World Cup final. “I could finish 2025 without any more titles, but I would still have won the best trophy. I want to win more than ten titles this year, but if that doesn’t happen, I still have the whole big thing,” said Littler the memorable evening.
Just as sports Germany celebrated the Grand Slam titles of the young Steffi Graf and the young Boris Becker in the 80s, England is now celebrating the rapid rise of youngster Littler. “I always take my hat off to people who beat me in a great game. That’s just how sport works,” said the Dutchman van Gerwen, who is a three-time champion but has also lost four World Cup finals.
