‘Where’s Peng Shuai’ T-shirts handed out ahead of Melbourne women’s final

“We distribute hundreds of T-shirts for free and many people who are going to see the final are wearing them. They are enthusiastic”, said Drew Pavlou, one of the people who has organized the distribution.

Pavlou explained that all the shirts were handed out to the participants upon arrival, in the hope that the message would be carried across screens around the world during the final.

The former doubles champion at Roland Garros accused a former Chinese leader in early November of forcing her into a sexual encounter during a relationship that lasted several years. His subsequent disappearance had raised concern in the tennis world.

His disappearance after the accusation caused concern in the world of tennis, sports and in other areas, until the tennis player spoke by videoconference with the president of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach.

The president of the IOC had invited him on that occasion to hold a meeting during the Beijing Olympics, which will be held from February 4 to 20.

But that interview did not avoid controversy; The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) decided to end its tournaments in China to protest Beijing’s lack of transparency over Peng Shuai’s accusations.
