DHB team
Olympic heroes and newcomers – this is the German squad for the Handball World Cup
The German handball players were a tight-knit team at the Olympics. A large part of the team has stayed together, but new players are also coming in for the World Cup.
Last year the DHB selection caused a surprise at the Olympic Games in Paris. The team led by captain Johannes Golla won the silver medal. Now the team of “young, wild people” and veterans want to build on this strong performance at the 2025 Handball World Championship in Croatia, Norway and Denmark.
“It’s one of the most talented teams in the world. Normally this team should keep getting better,” coach Alfred Gislason recently said about his squad. After the injury-related absences of Sebastian Heymann (left back) and Jannik Kohlbacher (circle), the 65-year-old coach nominated Lukas Stutzke from TSV Hannover-Burgdorf and Tim Zechel from SC Magdeburg.
Of the silver heroes, the DHB selection is also missing Kai Häfner, who has resigned, and Tim Hornke. Otherwise, Gislason tried to keep the Olympic team together as much as possible. 14 of the 19 nominated players were also in the squad in Paris.
Young DHB guard takes responsibility at the Handball World Cup
The veterans in the team include the 33-year-old goalkeeper Andreas Wolff, the 31-year-old left winger Rune Dahmke and Christoph Steinert, 34. But it’s not just the over-30 players who take on responsibility in the German team. Captain Johannes Golla (circle) is 27 years old, the playmaker and star of the team, Juri Knorr, is only 24. Top performer Julian Köster (left back) is also one of the young players at 24. And 22-year-old Renars Uscins (back right) partially carried the DHB selection on his shoulders at the Olympic Games.
DHB coach Alfread Gislason can draw from a broad squad. The Icelander did not cause any surprises with the nominated players. Instead, he relies on proven forces. The team could benefit during the tournament from knowing each other and being well-coordinated. “We have kept a large part of this squad together at its core over the last two years,” said Gislason, explaining his selection on ZDF. The team was spared any major injury problems before the World Cup. The conditions for a good start to the tournament have been created.
