Anniversaries in Argentina: what happened on a day like today, January 8

I discovered all the events that are commemorated today and left a mark on Argentina and the world.

There are several events that marked culture and history and that happened on a day like today, January 8. This day saw the birth of important figures of world culture, but it also commemorates the murder of a figure considered popular saint and that marked the history of Argentina and, specifically, the culture of the province of Corrientes: the Gauchito Gil.

Antonio Mamerto Gil Núñez was born in 1840 in Pay Ubre, Corrientes, and was part of the War of the Triple Alliance. However, when he was summoned to fight with the Autonomist Party in the civil war of Corrientes against the Liberal Party, he flatly refused, which led to him being persecuted by the military. Finally He was captured and killed on January 8, 1878.

But Gauchito is not only recognized for his impact on politics. The myth that turned him into a religious figure relates that before being executed, he predicted that his executioner’s son was seriously ill and that I had to pray in the name of Gil. Over time, what was said was fulfilled and the executioner’s son was miraculously curedso different towns began to pray in his name.
