Zverev one of four favorites for Becker in Melbourne
Last year Alexander Zverev reached the semi-finals in Melbourne. This time Boris Becker has even more confidence in him.
Germany’s tennis legend Boris Becker believes Alexander Zverev will win his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. “I think he is one of the four favorites,” said Becker in a Eurosport media round. “Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are my first candidates, followed by Zverev and Novak Djokovic.”
The first Grand Slam tournament of the season begins this Sunday. As in previous years, Becker (57) will accompany the event as a Eurosport expert from Germany.
Nerves are crucial for Grand Slam titles
Last year Zverev reached the semi-finals in Melbourne, but then had to admit defeat to Russian Daniil Medvedev in five rounds after leading the set 2-0.
“He has all the skills to make it work this year,” Becker said about Zverev. In the end, it’s mostly a matter of nerves. “The quality is not lacking. But the second week of the Grand Slam has nothing to do with tennis. It’s about mentality and psyche. I hope he has now found a solution,” said Becker, who himself played in Melbourne in 1991 and 1996 won the title.
