Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev was fined $12,000 for his behavior in the Australian Open semi-final match with the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. On Saturday, January 29, reports “Sport-Express”.
Medvedev received an $8,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct and a $4,000 fine for “obscenity.” At the same time, Tsitsipas was fined $5,000 for coaching.
On January 28, the Russian defeated the representative of Greece and reached the final of the Australian Open tournament, where Spaniard Rafael Nadal will become his opponent. In the semifinals, Medvedev defeated Tsitsipas in four sets – 7:6 (7:5), 4:6, 6:4, 6:1. During the game, the Russian criticized the referee, who, in his opinion, did not respond to the prompts of Father Tsitsipas. The Greek by the end of the match received a warning.
President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev commented on the incident, explaining that psychological stress during the match played a role.
Former fifth racket of the world Anna Chakvetadze noted that Medvedev needed to “get angry in a sporting manner”, but he is still learning to play more calmly.
The meeting between Medvedev and Nadal will take place on Sunday, January 30.
In the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on January 26, the Russian defeated the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in five sets. As Tarpischev said at the time, this victory of Medvedev was historic.
