Musk is said to be interested in buying Liverpool FC – fans react outraged
In the Premier League it is common for billionaires to buy clubs. Tesla boss Elon Musk is reportedly interested in Liverpool FC. What do the English club’s fans say about this?
In the football business, sums of money in the billions are traded. Perfect conditions for US billionaire Elon Musk. That’s probably what his father Errol Musk thought when he told Times Radio in an interview that his son was interested in buying the traditional English club Liverpool FC.
Musk Sr. spreads the rumor at a time when his son Elon is waging a mud fight with the British government. In the past few days he has repeatedly attacked British Prime Minister Keir Starmer – and supported the imprisoned British right-wing extremist Tommy Robinson.
Is the interest in Liverpool FC now part of his strategy to have more influence in Great Britain? Or just hot air?
Musk has family in Liverpool
According to the Times newspaper, the owners are not interested in talking to Musk. Since October 2010, the traditional English club has belonged to the US investors Fenway Sports Group. Musk is also not known as a big football fan. But as his father said in the interview, the family does indeed have a connection to Liverpool: “Well, my mother – his grandmother – was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool,” said Errol Musk. “We were lucky enough to know some of the Beatles because they grew up with us, my family.”
Elon Musk himself has not yet commented publicly on the rumors. The relationship with his father is also considered difficult. So it is questionable whether there is any truth to the rumors. But they are at least so real that fans reacted with outrage.
Fans comment on the rumor
As “Sport Bild” reports, Liverpool supporters don’t believe in the Tesla boss taking over their club. “Any Liverpool fan who wants Elon Musk to buy is not a Liverpool fan,” writes a user on the news platform X, which ironically already belongs to Musk.
“I don’t think there’s a single real Liverpool fan who would want Elon Musk near the club,” says another. And a third wrote: “Keep Elon Musk far away from Liverpool FC.” Only last year fans had to cope with the departure of popular coach Jürgen Klopp. A purchase of the traditional club by Elon Musk would be a further disappointment for many Reds supporters.
