Friedrich victory without Wulff – rival at the same time
One of his pushers is released because a banned stimulant was discovered in a sample. Francesco Friedrich still wins – together with a compatriot.
Even without his currently released pusher Simon Wulff, Olympic bobsleigh champion Francesco Friedrich won the World Cup in St. Moritz – at the same time as compatriot and rival Johannes Lochner. In the two-man bobsleigh competition, both teams achieved a total time of 2:12:21 minutes after two runs. “That was what we imagined after the week,” said Friedrich: “It was a hard week with all these issues surrounding Simon.”
“Races for which I still do the sport”
After the first round, the 34-year-old Friedrich and Wulff substitute Alexander Schüller were in third place, but only five hundredths of a second behind Lochner and his pusher Georg Fleischhauer. In the second race, Friedrich/Schüller raced to first place with a start and distance record.
“Now we’re doing everything we can to find a solution as quickly as possible. To get this thing out of the way and check what it’s connected to: that’s all we can say at the moment,” said Friedrich, referring to Wulff, who requested opening of the B sample. The former track and field athlete had an abnormal test result during a competition check.
Finally, Adam Ammour and pusher Benedikt Hertel ensured a German triple success in the Engadine in Switzerland in third place in the final standings. “A very, very strong race from our men, who really drove away with three of them at the front,” commented national coach René Spies. “These are the races for which I still do the sport,” said Lochner.
Exempt from the national association for precautionary reasons
In Wulff’s case, methylhexanamine was detected in a test on December 7th in Altenberg. This stimulant is prohibited in competitions. It is contained in so-called slimming products and dietary supplements and is now one of the most frequently found stimulants in doping samples.
According to the World Anti-Doping Code and the anti-doping rules of the IBSF, no provisional ban has been imposed on the athlete, who can continue to compete during the ongoing proceedings. However, the German association BSD released Wulff as a precautionary measure in order to rule out possible sanctions against the team afterwards.
