Ter Stegen celebrates: first Barça title under Flick

A classic for the history books. FC Barcelona is 0-1 behind, then Hansi Flick’s team really turns on the game. Dream goals, dream combinations and Flick’s first title with the Catalans.

FC Barcelona stormed to their first title under coach Hansi Flick with dream goals in a memorable Clásico. In the Supercopa final, the Catalans humiliated defending champions and arch rivals Real Madrid 5:2 (4:1). Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha twice and Alex Balde made Barcelona’s football gala and the 15th Supercopa title perfect. “The goal of big clubs is always to win titles. We work hard for that. We are now happy and proud to have won this title. But we now have to show how good we are in every game,” said Flick.

Shortly after midnight, German national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who still had a knee injury, received the trophy and started the “Supercampeónes” game. “It’s a sign of how we want to play now and in the future,” emphasized center forward Lewandowski.

Real coach Ancelotti: “I’m sad”

After an early 0-1 deficit thanks to a world-class goal from superstar Kylian Mbappé in the fifth minute, Flick’s team initially got going without European champion Dani Olmo, who was eligible to play again. Led by super talent Yamal, the Catalans turned the game around in the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia – and how! “Barça sweeps Madrid off the pitch,” wrote “As”. “I’m sad, like all the fans. It was a tough evening,” said Real coach Carlo Ancelotti.

With a great goal when he beat Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois from 16 meters, Yamal started the hunt for goals in the 22nd minute. Robert Lewandowski (36′) gave Barça the lead with a penalty, before Raphinha (39′) increased the lead with a header from eleven meters after a dream pass from Jules Koundé.

But that’s not enough. Because, among other things, Mbappé was treated on the pitch and his left ankle was bandaged after a challenge, there was a long added time – to the delight of the Barcelona fans. Because Balde (45th + 10) scored after a picture-perfect counterattack to make it 4-1 before the break.

Club president Joan Laporta, sitting in an armchair in the VIP box, was also thrilled: the battle for Olmo’s eligibility to play had been won for the time being thanks to a decision by the Supreme Sports Council and was now presented to Real. At the later award ceremony there was a warm hug for Flick and especially for Olmo, who initially didn’t come into the game after the break.

Endless spectacle: emergency brake from the Barça keeper against Mbappé

Barcelona continued to perform magic without him. Again it was the equally outstanding Raphinha (48th) who duped the Real defense around Germany international Antonio Rüdiger.

As if there wasn’t enough spectacle, Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off with a red card after an emergency stop on Mbappé. Flick brought Olmo, who shortly afterwards lay on the grass with his face contorted in pain after a duel.

Substitute keeper Iñaki Peña moved into the goal. Peña had his fingers on Rodryko’s subsequent free kick, but he couldn’t save it: 2:5 from Real’s point of view after 61 minutes. Ancelotti brought in ex-world footballer Luka Modric, but even he couldn’t avert the disgrace against a Barcelona that was sometimes playing in a state of intoxication.
