The national steel industry is going through a critical moment, aggravated by the economic recession, the drop in sales and the entry of imported products, especially from China.

In this context, Ferroglobe Argentina SRL, specialized in ferroalloys, confirmed that it will stop its only active production unit in Luján de Cuyo as of February 1.

According to the official statement, the decision responds to an “excess inventory of finished products” and will be used to perform maintenance tasks on its ovens.

The company did not establish a specific date to resume activities.

The company explained that this measure is a consequence of the “fall in sales worldwide and nationally.”

However, he stressed that he is working together with Governor Alfredo Cornejo and the National Energy Secretariat to find a “long-term solution”, focused on obtaining a special electricity rate for ultra-electrointensive industries that allows production to resume.

With operations in Mendoza since 1973, Ferroglobe has two 25 MVA Demag Technology furnaces, designed for the production of calcium silicon and ferrosilicon.

At a global level, it also has production plants for other metals in different countries.
