“The archway on the edge of the Hausberg is already there, people are working hard there. And you can hear helicopters flying all day long,” says Paul Schmid from Linz as he lets his gaze wander towards the window. The 24-year-old has a balcony with a Streif view. Impressed by the steepness of the icy slope, which “never looks as steep on television as it really is”, he will only follow the skiing spectacle on the Hahnenkamm next week as an interested observer. His focus is on another icy surface.
Paul Schmid once started playing ice hockey in Linz at the request of an acquaintance of his parents. After years in the Linz youth team, the then 17-year-old moved to a Norwegian junior league, where he was able to achieve immediate success, even though “the competition abroad is much greater. You have to earn every game through hard work.” For that reason alone, the foreign country is a good school, says the Linzer in the OÖN ice hockey podcast “Eisbrecher”. After further positions in North American college leagues, he moved back to Austria last summer.
