This was the case of Ali Banat, a tycoon whose life took a drastic turn after a diagnosis that led him to transform his wealth into a humanitarian legacy.

With a fortune built on business successes, Banat lived surrounded by unimaginable luxuries. However, a terminal illness inspired him to sell everything and dedicate his last years to improving the living conditions of thousands of people in Africa.

Who was Ali Banat?

Ali Banat was born on February 16, 1982 in Australiain the suburb of Greenacre, of Palestinian descent. From a young age, he showed an entrepreneurial spirit that led him to found two highly profitable companies: one of security and other electrical energy.

Thanks to his business skills, he accumulated a fortune that allowed him to lead a dream lifestyle. He lived in a mansion, drove luxury cars, including a Ferrari Spider valued at 600 thousand dollarss, and had a wardrobe full of exclusive brands such as Louis Vuitton.

However, Banat was not only known for his business success, but also for his charismatic character and his generosity to those around him. This lifestyle would change radically in October 2015, when he received the news that would mark a before and after in his life.

He was diagnosed with advanced stage cancer and doctors estimated that he only had seven months to live. At that moment, everything material lost importance. The illness not only affected his body, but transformed his perspective on the purpose of existence.

From tycoon to benefactor: how a diagnosis changed Ali Banat’s life

The diagnosis was devastating, but Banat chose to see it as a “gift.” As explained in an interview titled “Gifted with Cancer”cancer gave him the opportunity to change his approach in life. Thus, he decided to sell all his properties and dedicate his resources to philanthropic causes. “When you discover that you are sick, hoarding is the last thing you want to do. He created the organization Muslims Around the World (MATW, for its acronym in English) with the aim of improving living conditions in some of the poorest countries in the world, especially in Africa. The foundation initially focused on Togobut quickly extended its reach to Ghana, Burkina Faso and Benin.

MATW projects included the construction of mosques, orphanages, schools for hundreds of children, hospitals and shelters for women in vulnerable situations. Banat also financed the creation of basic infrastructure such as drinking water wells, directly impacting the quality of life of entire communities.

Despite his illness, Ali personally supervised many of these projects. He frequently traveled to places where his foundation was active, ensuring that resources reached those who needed them most. His efforts were widely recognized, inspiring others to follow his example.

In June 2018, Banat passed away at age 36, almost three years after his initial diagnosis. Before his death, he left a video message that moved the world, urging people to seek purpose beyond material possessions.
