After losing a set: Zverev in the quarter-finals in Melbourne
In the round of 16 of the Australian Open against Frenchman Ugo Humbert, Alexander Zverev survived a weak phase. An unpleasant opponent awaits in the round of the best eight.
Alexander Zverev made it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open despite a short period of weakness. The world number two won against number 14 seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6:1, 2:6, 6:3, 6:2 and is only three wins away from the longed-for first Grand Slam title. In his fourth match, Zverev lost a set for the first time.
In his fourth quarter-final in Melbourne, Zverev is likely to face even more resistance on Tuesday: his next opponent is the number 12 seeded US professional Tommy Paul, who lost 6:1, 6:1, 6:1 against the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina left an excellent impression. The statistics speak against Zverev: he lost the two previous duels with Paul on hard courts.
Zverev draws level with Haas
With his 105th victory on the Grand Slam stage, Zverev drew level with Tommy Haas. Of all male German tennis professionals in history, only Boris Becker (163) has more victories to his name.
Zverev started dominantly and error-free against Humbert before the Frenchman visibly surprised the German with a significantly improved return game. But the 2021 Olympic champion recovered and scored his first match point after 2:16 hours.
