The 2028 European Football Championship will take place in Great Britain and Ireland: that much was certain. It is now also known which channels will broadcast the European Championship games.

ARD and ZDF have acquired the TV rights for the 2028 European Football Championship. Their joint agency SportA concluded a contract with the agency CAA Eleven and the European Football Union (UEFA), as the German Press Agency learned from negotiating circles. There is currently no confirmation from the two public broadcasters.

ARD and ZDF secured the media rights to all 51 games of the tournament in Great Britain and Ireland for the German market. In the previous tender for the home European Championships in 2024 almost six years ago, Telekom surprisingly prevailed against the joint offer from ARD and ZDF.

EM 2028: ARD and ZDF will broadcast 51 games

Only after a complicated exchange of rights were the first and second teams each allowed to broadcast 17 home European Championship games via sub-licenses last year. Twelve further encounters were shown on RTL. Telekom showed all games live, five of them exclusively and only against payment.

Thanks to the contract that has now been concluded for 2028, ARD and ZDF have secured real quota guarantees. The European Championships last year were a huge success with spectators. More than 20 live broadcasts of Euro 2024 attracted more than ten million people to their televisions. The quarter-final defeat of the DFB team against Spain achieved the top value with an average of 27.154 million viewers on ARD and a market share of 80.9 percent.
