Alpine Ski World Cup
Ski racer Schramm is seriously injured in Kitzbühel
This year too, there have been injuries during training on the notorious Streif. The German skier Jacob Schramm falls violently and is transported away by helicopter like an Austrian.
The German ski racer Jacob Schramm fell badly during the second training session for the Hahnenkamm downhill run in Kitzbühel and was flown to hospital by helicopter. The 26-year-old, who made his World Cup debut on the legendary Streif last winter, suffered a concussion and a complex knee injury. The German Ski Association announced this. Further investigations are to follow.
The Austrian Felix Hacker, currently leading in the European Cup, had previously been transported away in a helicopter. The 25-year-old had aborted his training ride after his inner ski slipped in a right-hand bend. Hacker suffered “a cruciate ligament tear and a torn meniscus in his left knee on the steep slope exit without falling,” the Austrian association said. The season is over for the Carinthian.
Last year’s winner Sarrazin is missing injured
The Streif is considered one of the most dangerous routes in the Alpine racing calendar, and the descent in the small Tyrolean town is the most prestigious ski race in the world. Bad falls have happened again and again in the past.
Last year Cyprien Sarrazin celebrated a double victory in Kitzbühel. However, the Frenchman has been out injured since his training crash in Bormio on December 27th. He had suffered a bleed near the brain and required surgery. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation in France.
This winter, unlike last year, the Streif will once again host a Super-G on Friday and a downhill run on Saturday. At the end of the weekend there is a slalom on the Ganslernhang on Sunday.
