Hamann and Matthäus recommend Kovac as interim coach for BVB
For the Sky experts Lothar Matthäus and Didi Hamann one thing is certain: the former Bayern coach could make a difference at BVB – but there are other construction sites, they think.
Sky expert Dietmar Hamann recommends that Borussia Dortmund first install Niko Kovac as interim coach to replace Nuri Sahin. “An interim coach is the best and only solution for me. I would ask Kovac if he would do it until the end of the season, then wait to see what happens in the next few weeks and make a decision in the spring,” Hamann wrote in his column.
“The players need a coach who takes action, who makes decisions unconditionally, and I believe that Kovac would do that.” From the TV expert’s point of view, the separation from Sahin comes four games too late: “The step could or should have been taken during the winter break.”
BVB: Tensions between Kehl and Mislintat
Kovac would also be a good choice for record national player Lothar Matthäus. “He brings everything with him. Above all, he is not a coach whose players can dance around. That’s why it’s definitely a good idea for Dortmund to talk to him. Knowing him, he’ll want to make things clear. what’s happening around him in the club,” said Matthäus.
But there also have to be changes at the management level. He also questions the role of advisor Matthias Sammer: “Nothing against Matthias, but that’s not good for the situation in Dortmund because I know how the dressing room works. Matthias is an honest person. But that’s not what BVB wants “When an external contact works in television and publicly criticizes the team.” The tensions between sports director Sebastian Kehl and technical director Sven Mislintat also lead to “discontent”.
This is also a point where Hamann would start. “It’s probably not possible with both, then Lars Ricken has to choose one,” said Hamann. “It was always one of Borussia Dortmund’s great strengths that Aki Watzke and Michael Zorc spoke with one voice to the outside world, even when there was controversy internally. That hasn’t been the case at BVB for some time,” he said 51 year old.
