Infection: Knorr and Dahmke are missing handball players against Italy

National coach Alfred Gislason has to do without two players in the important World Cup main round game against Italy. Marian Michalczik is subsequently added to the World Cup squad.

Germany’s handball players will have to do without playmaker Juri Knorr and left winger Rune Dahmke in the important World Cup main round game against Italy. The German Handball Association confirmed this a good hour before the game kicked off (6 p.m./ZDF and Sportdeutschland.TV). The duo is out due to a flu-like infection. The ARD “Sportschau” and “Bild” first reported on it.

Knorr had already reported a sore throat after the 30:40 defeat against defending champions Denmark and did not train on Wednesday. Knorr (24) and Dahmke (31) were moved to single rooms in the German team hotel in Silkeborg in order to minimize the risk of infection for the other World Cup players.

After all, Franz Semper is in the DHB squad for the first time in this final round. The backcourt player had not been used so far due to muscular problems. Germany can qualify for the quarter-finals early with a win against the Italians, who are tied on points, if Switzerland does not win against gold favorite Denmark. A defeat in the duel with Squadra Azzurra would practically mean the end for the DHB selection.

Michalczik can be used on Saturday

National coach Alfred Gislason reacted to Knorr’s loss by nominating Marian Michalczik, who will subsequently be added to the German World Cup squad. According to the DHB, the 27-year-old playmaker from Bundesliga club TSV Hannover-Burgdorf is scheduled to arrive at the team’s headquarters in Silkeborg in the evening. Michalczik could therefore play for the first time on Saturday in the final main round game of the Olympic silver medalist against Tunisia.
