New salary increase for domestic workers: how much they will earn in February

The National Commission for Work in Private Homes (CNTCP) will meet this Thursday, January 23, to define the next salary increase for domestic workers, an adjustment that workers in the sector have been waiting for for months. As planned by the Ministry of Economy, the monthly increase should not exceed 1%, which opens the debate on the effectiveness of the measure to combat the accumulated loss of purchasing power.

The impact of the latest increase

The sector’s last wage adjustment was a retroactive 6% increase agreed at the end of last year. This increase is broken down by 3.2% on August 2024 salaries and 2.8% over those of September 2024. However, the delay in the approval of said agreement harmed the collection of bonuses and vacations, as reported by the union of domestic workers.

Currently, the base salary values for the most representative category, “General Tasks Personnel“, are the following:

These amounts correspond only to the gross salary, so the employer must include additional payments for seniority, retirement contributions and social work.

Union demands: a substantial improvement

Representatives of the union sector have raised the need for a significant salary restructuring to improve purchasing power. According to them, a 100% increase would be necessary to achieve a real improvement in income. If finalized, salaries could reach $6,000 per hour and $720,000 per month, a figure that would mark a radical change in the economic reality of the workers.

The next salary increase for domestic workers will be key to determining whether workers will be able to recover part of the purchasing power lost to inflation.

Additional benefits: seniority and unfavorable area

In addition to the salary, workers are entitled to certain additional benefits. The seniority bonus, effective since September 2021, grants a Additional 1% for each year workedstarting to be computed from 2020 without retroactive effect. On the other hand, those who work in unfavorable areas—including provinces such as Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, and others in the Patagonian region—receive an additional 30% above the minimum wage established for each category.

The expectation about the next increase is high, and it is expected that the new decisions of the CNTCP can respond to the demands of the union and the need to adjust income in the face of inflation. However, the room for maneuver appears limited, which could maintain tension between the parties.
