The short-term trainer shapes an era
Once he had come to the DFB as an emergency helper, now he stays until 2028: Julian Nagelsmann’s moving home European home has made a new coach.
Which echo the European Championship triggered in Julian Nagelmann, which she made to sound, was felt weeks later when the tournament had long ended.
In September and October, Nagelmann called the national team in Herzogenaurach into courses. The players stayed in an apartment village called Home Ground, which had already been their base camp during the European Championship. Nagelsmann, so that this could be interpreted at the time, wanted to continue playing the European Championship and forgot the quarter-final defeat against Spain with intoxicating victories in the Nations League.
A trick to attribute players and fans in the summer of 2024 when the country gathered and celebrated behind the team. Not just in the stadiums, on the streets and fan miles. Even in front of the team hotel in Stuttgart, for example, in the afternoon before the Hungarian game, so loudly that the window panes vibrated.
With no team, Julian Nagelsmann identified himself as much as with the DFB team
All of this moved a lot in Julian Nagelsmann. The European Championship made him another trainer. The German national team is his team – rather when the teams in Munich, Leipzig or Hoffenheim were previously. When Nagelsmann talks about the players today, you think you hear a father’s voice, but he is hardly older than her.
It is this binding that made a long-term coach from Nagelmann, the short-term coach. On Friday, the German Football Association (DFB) announced that Nagelsmann prematurely extended its contract until the summer of 2026 until 2028.
Nagelsmann originally only promised the DFB for ten months in the summer of 2023. An emergency helper job was advertised, Nagelsmann was supposed to set up the team again after the dark flick years and to the European Championship. After that, that was clear to everyone, he would take over a club team again – after all, Nagelsmann publicly complained of how much he lacks the daily work on the training ground.
This longing has gone out. The club coach has changed into a convinced national coach. Nagelsmann is now on the best way to shape an era as before Joachim Löw (World Champion 2014), Franz Beckenbauer (World Champion 1990) or Helmut Schön (World Champion 1974 and European Champion 1972). Nagelsmann’s work must be measured in these large national coaches in the future.
The contract extension is a coup for the DFB
The contract extension with Nagelsmann is a coup for the DFB. Even in the spring of 2023, the displaced World Cup 2022 in Qatar had an effect, the association was in ruins. The position of German national coach had lost all shine, who wanted to do the job? With this anemic team you only seemed to be able to damage your own reputation.
These times now seem to be lying back. All the lead, inhibited and uptight has given way to a new spirit of optimism. Nagelsmann sparked her, and now he is so overwhelmed by the force of his own work that he wants to continue at least three years.
The EM 2024 is still not whistled for Nagelsmann. There can only be rest for this trainer when the quarter-final defeat is finally repaid. The night after the lost Spain game, Nagelsmann announced that he wanted to become world champions in 2026. However, he said that with a smug smile, it remained open whether he only wanted to triumph the journalists in the press room of the Stuttgart stadium. “You like the statement, right?” Nagelsmann called, “the eyes are all big. Madness.”
At the latest this Friday, the day of the contract extension, the renewed commitment to his team, one knows: Nagelmann is serious.
