Handball players meet Portugal in the quarter-finals

The German handball players are playing against Portugal at the start of the knockout phase. The southern Europeans have not yet lost a World Cup game.

The German handball players will meet Portugal in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. The Southern Europeans secured victory in their main round group with a comfortable 46:28 win over Chile. The game will take place next Wednesday in Norway’s capital Oslo.

The DHB team had already secured second place in their group on Thursday with their success over Italy, thus completing their early entry into the round of the top eight. The final victory in the main round duel with Tunisia was meaningless. The group winner is gold favorite Denmark, who will face Brazil in the quarter-finals.

Doping vortex in Portugal

Against the Portuguese, against whom they won both European Championship test matches last year, national coach Alfred Gislason needs his protégés to be in full possession of their strength. There is currently a question mark surrounding the appearances of the sick Juri Knorr, Rune Dahmke and Lukas Stutzke. It is still unclear whether the DHB will nominate a professional for backcourt player Franz Semper, who left injured.

Portugal is one of the medal contenders at this tournament after victories over Norway and Spain. The southern Europeans only lost points in the draw against Sweden. At the start of the World Cup, their playmaker Miguel Martins caused a stir. The 27-year-old missed the tournament because of a positive doping test from last year.
