Bayer continues – two top German clubs have to be followed
The champions League’s leagueapies ended with a mammoth match day. A German club made the direct move into the round of 16, two have to tremble – and two are out.
Bayer Leverkusen was the only Bundesliga club to make direct entry into the round of 16 of the Champions League. The German champion prevailed 2-0 (1-0) on the last matchday of the preliminary round against outsider Sparta Prague and ended the phase with 16 points. With their goals, Florian Wirtz (32nd minute) and Nathan Tella (64th) made the successful success perfect. Record champions Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, have to go and take the detour via the playoffs in mid -February. The season in the premier class has ended for VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig.
FC Bayern prevailed at home against outsiders Slovan Bratislava 3: 1 (1-0) and thanks to the goals of Thomas Müller (8th), Harry Kane (63.) and Kingsley Coman (84.) . However, the Munich missed the top eight. That is why the playoffs are just as much about progress as for Borussia Dortmund.
Bavaria and BVB take a detour via the play-offs
The BVB won 3: 1 (2: 0) against Schachtar Donetsk. Serhou Guirassy (17th/44th) and Ramy Bensebaini (79th) were successful for the hosts. During the encounter, the “Bild” newspaper, the TV broadcaster Sky and Sportschau.de reported that Niko Kovac will be the new coach of Borussia in the coming days and should be on the bench in the next round.
VfB Stuttgart was a chance at 1: 4 (0: 3) against the French champion Paris Saint-Germain and conceded the fourth defeat in the eighth game. Ex-Dortmund Ousmane Dembélé scored three goals for PSG, VfB benefited from an own goal of the Paris Willian Pacho (77th).
RB Leipzig had already awarded the progress before the eighth matchday. The Saxons said goodbye with a 0: 1 (0: 1) at Sturm Graz in Austria.

Already on Friday at 12 p.m. the draw for the playoffs will take place in Nyon on 11/12. and 18./19. February. The eight best clubs in the group phase are free on these match days, but the teams in places 9 to 24 fights for progress.
The complete co-phase is carried out via the classic tournament tree analogous to a Grand Slam tournament in tennis. After the playoffs, the draw for the round of 16 takes place. It is the last draw because the further path until the final in Munich on May 31 will automatically result in the tournament tree.
