Russia relates the Intermission Music Festival after its exclusion from Eurovision by the offensive in Ukraine

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putinsigned a decree on Monday to organize a International Music Contest in 2025called Interview. This decision arises after Russia was outside the renowned Eurovision Festival due to its offensive in Ukraine.

In times of the Soviet Union, there was already an event with this name, aimed at Allied countries of the socialist block. Since the dissolution of the USSR, Russia has several times to relive this format.

A new musical contest with international ambitions

According to the presidential decree, the contest, called Intervidenie In Russian, it will take place in Moscow and its surroundings. Its purpose is “Develop international cultural and humanitarian cooperation”. To lead the organization, the Vice Prime Minister Dmitri Chernishenko was appointed.

Last year, Mikhail Shvydkoi, presidential for cultural cooperation, said that the competition would be carried out in September 2025 and that there were already “about 20 countries” interested in participating.

Interview had its boom in the 1960s and 1970s, with the participation of Eastern Block countries, including Poland and then Czechoslovakia, although other states were also added.

Russia was part of Eurovision From 1994 to 2021 and presented some of its most prominent artists. In 2008, Dima Bilan won the victory with the song “Believe”which allowed Moscow to be the festival headquarters in 2009.

However, in 2022, after the beginning of the conflict with Ukraine, Russia was excluded from competition. At the momentEurovision is financed through the contributions of organizations belonging to the European Broadcasting Union (UER).
