The Olympic Games always produce great heroes – athletes who demonstrate extraordinary achievements, break records and win medals. But Olympia also lives from the outsiders who live the Olympic motto “Being there is everything”.
One of the most famous in the history of the Winter Olympics is Michael Edwards, better known as Eddie the Eagle. Edwards fulfilled his dream of becoming the first British ski jumper to compete in the Games. It was an event then and its name is forever associated with the Winter Olympics.
In addition, the Olympic idea is lived through fairness. Although the reality of competition often seems different (and a little rougher), athletes sometimes demonstrate through gestures or effort that fair play can matter. US speed skater Brittany Bowe, for example, gave up a starting place to give her faster teammate the opportunity to compete on her special course (in this case the 500 meter sprint).
Here we present a small selection of the other Olympic heroes.
