After Fiél-Aus: Stefan Leitl is the new Hertha coach

Stefan Leitl is supposed to preserve Hertha BSC from the crash from the 2nd Bundesliga. The ex-Hannoverian has to stabilize the team quickly. He brings an old acquaintance.

Stefan Leitl is the new head coach in the crisis-related second division club Hertha BSC. The 47-year-old succeeds Cristian Fiél, from whom the Berliners had separated in series after four defeats on Sunday. Leitl, who surprisingly led the SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the Bundesliga in 2021 and recently looked after Hannover 96, signed a contract until 2027.

“We are glad that with Stefan Leitl we were able to win a very experienced trainer for ourselves who knows the league and has proven to be able to form and develop teams and players at his previous stations,” said Hertha sports director Benjamin Weber in a club announcement.

The Hertha wanted to play for the climb, but after a catastrophic start to the new year, the Berliners continued to slip. The lead over relegation rank 16 is only five points left. Already on Friday the capital club welcomes 1st FC Nürnberg in the Olympic Stadium (6.30 p.m./Sky).

Leitl was already a topic in Berlin in summer

Born in Munich, the Leitl was already a candidate at Hertha last summer. Now he is said to have been the person responsible for the Fiél successor. Ex-professional Leitl had to go to Hanover shortly before the turn of the year. At that time, the Lower Saxony were seventh with two points behind a direct promotion zone. His last game as a 96 coach was a zero number against Hertha shortly before Christmas.

Ex-Herthaner becomes an assistant coach

As an assistant coach, Leitl brings a former Herthaner. André Mijatović played for the Berliners for two years and was captain of the promotion team 2011. Leitl and Hertha’s head of the license department, Andreas “Zecke” Neuendorf, still know each other from player times in Ingolstadt.
