The former top referee Volker Roth is dead. The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Tuesday. Roth turned 83.
He was one of the best-known impartial in Germany, headed a total of 128 Bundesliga games from 1974 to 1986 and was part of the FIFA referee team at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Roth was also on the pitch in black and Tottenham Hotspur in the same year at significant final games such as the DFB Cup final in 1984 between FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund or the UEFA Cup final between the RSC Anderlecht and Tottenham Hotspur. “Volker Roth did a lot”
After his active career, the native Chemnitzer switched to the official level. Among other things, he was chairman of the DFB referee committee from 1995 to 2010. He was also a member of the UEFA referee commission. Roth was the bearer of the Golden Badge of Honor of the DFB.
“Volker has brought a lot for the German referee-especially through his international commitment. His death is a blow to us, we are very sad and feel with his relatives who are condolizing,” said DFB referee- Chef Knut Kircher on the death of a former top referee.
DFB Vice President Ronny Zimmermann said: “Volker Roth was an excellent referee and great referee official. The DFB will never forget what he has done for football in Germany. His death makes us very sad, we are in his family in thoughts that we wish a lot of strength in these difficult hours. “
