State Duma Deputy Nikolai Valuev on Friday, February 4, commented on the behavior of Ukrainian fans at the semi-final match of the European Futsal Championship, emphasizing that nationalist slogans against Russia did not help Ukraine win.
“It didn’t help them. They didn’t help their athletes,” he told REN TV.
Valuev compared the slogans of the fans of the Ukrainian team with “under-the-fence” swearing, emphasizing that at any competition, the fans represent their country.
“Propaganda, which in Ukraine brings up the basest and most radical, has its own free and grateful ears,” the deputy added.
At the same time, the people’s choice noted that, despite what happened, one should still concentrate on the game and the victory of the Russian football players who reached the Euro Futsal final.
Earlier on Friday, at the meeting between the teams of Ukraine and Russia in the semi-finals of the European Futsal Championship, Russian athletes beat their opponents with a score of 3:2 and reached the Euro final.
During the match, Ukrainian fans shouted Russophobic phrases, such as “who does not jump, that Muscovite.” At the same time, netizens drew attention to a fragment of the broadcast, in which the coach gives Ukrainians installations in Russian.
According to State Duma deputy Sergei Chepikov, what happened during the semi-final match with Russia at the European Futsal Championship, when Ukrainian fans chanted nationalist slogans, can be regarded as “a manifestation of the culture of individuals”, this should be punished by sanctions against the Ukrainian team itself.
The European Futsal Championship takes place in the Netherlands from January 19 to February 6. In the main match of the tournament, the Russians will play with the winner of the meeting Portugal-Spain.
