Arminia Bielefeld has struck again: the favorite fright in the current DFB Cup season throws the next Bundesliga club from the competition. In the quarter -finals, the third division team won 2-1 (2-0) against Werder Bremen. Bielefeld had previously won against the first division clubs Union Berlin and SC Freiburg.

A goal by Marius Wörl (35th minute) and an own goal of Julián Malatini (41st) ensured the surprising Bielefeld 2-0 lead for the break. Only Oliver Burke (56th) met for the Bremen. Despite some chances, it was not enough.

The Bielefeld were driven by the passionate fans on the Alm – there was finally something to celebrate for the suffering audience in East Westphalia. In the middle of it is also a prominent face: Kevin Kühnert supported the team from the standing grandstand.

During the ZDF broadcast, the former SPD general secretary, who did not start again in the Bundestag election, was seen a few times. With Arminia scarf around his neck, the 35-year-old was feverish and sang-and was able to cheer in the end. Kühnert said a few years ago that he also became “out of pity” Arminia fan: “I found it unjust that this club had such a niche existence. Then I almost started to deal with it.” He also holds FC Bayern. There is usually more reason to be happy there – on Tuesday evening, however, the Bielefelders were happy to make the more than 26,000 fans on the Alm.

After the game, Werder Bremen’s Leonardo Bittencourt criticized his team sharply. Werder is in the process of quashing a season, which is a strong season until the winter break. “That stimulates me the most that we didn’t make it to stay,” said the 31-year-old. “No idea why. We think we are the most blatant or what do I know. That just goes to my sack, what we throw away here for opportunities.”

It is not due to the game idea mediated by coach Ole Werner. “Our plans are good week after week. But we just don’t bring it to the pitch,” said Bittencourt. “We have to show a different face now. Otherwise I don’t know where it ends.”

Werder has won only one of nine competitive games this year. The defeat in the trophy in the third division club is the preliminary low.

However, there are no atmospheric disorders in the team according to Bittencourt. “No, there is no and that’s the problem. Maybe there has to be a little fault.” The team is “probably too nice. Everything is always nice. Everything is always good,” said the veteran. “I shave over it now. This is afraid for me.”

Previously, VfB Stuttgart and defending champion Bayer Leverkusen had already qualified for the semi-finals in the DFB Cup. The last participant between RB Leipzig and VfL Wolfsburg will be determined on Wednesday.
